Stay Warm Reversible Stamps

"Stay Warm" reversible stamps by Stampin' Up! have a familiar, old-fashioned holiday feel to them, and I absolutely love it!

When I was looking through this year’s new holiday stamp sets released by Stampin’ Up!, the “Stay Warm” set immediately jumped out at me. The sweater, the beanie, the socks and mittens… they just looked so homey and cozy and… well… warm. It reminded me of growing up in Philadelphia and the amazing snow storms we played in when I was a kid. Of course, they were only amazing because I was a kid. Dealing with those storms as an adult is a whole other thing. I moved to California when I was 23, so I pretty much bypassed “snow as an adult” completely. (In your face, Mother Nature!)

But those wonderful childhood memories came rushing back when I started playing with these stamps. I particularly like these cards I made and wanted to share them because they highlight the reversible part of these stamps.

Reversible Stamps

Reversible stamps are specialized photopolymer stamps that allow you to use both sides of the stamp. This enables you to not only stamp the detailed line art, but also “fill it in” with the other solid side of the stamp.

A blue ink pad lies next to a clear stamp shaped like a sweater. The solid image of a sweater is stamped onto white paper twice, one lighter than the other.

Stamping off

Take note of how I used another technique on here called stamping off. I wanted to use Balmy Blue for the solid side, but it was a tad too dark. So, I inked up my stamp, stamped it once onto scrap card stock, then again on my card panel. The lighter shade was perfect and also created a neat, unintended effect that I’ll talk about in a moment. Try the stamping off technique with your inks and see what colors you get that you didn’t even know you had. With some of the darker colors, you can stamp off twice like I did here.

You can see how you’d have use for the different shades of colors. It just depends on the other colors in your card and what you’re trying to achieve.

Two versions

Back to this card… I made two versions, one in blue (Balmy Blue and Night of Navy) and one in purple (Fresh Freesia and Blackberry Bliss.)

After I stamped both sides of the images, I spritzed ink over the entire card. (see instructions) It ended up creating this cool effect where it makes the stamped elements look almost like stickers or rub-ons. I think it’s because I kept the fill-in colors light, so there’s just a tiny bit of difference between them and the background. Whatever it is, it’s kind of neat!
