That’s right, I’m ink blending with scraps again. I can’t help it! This month’s Paper Pumpkin kit, “Hearts for You” (January 2025) has perfect leftover heart shapes. They just scream out for this technique. How could I not listen?
If you want to see this technique explained in even more detail, check out my post from last year, Ink Blending with Leftovers where I used butterfly punch-outs for some nifty backgrounds.
Easier Than It Looks
Blending with scraps is truly easier than it looks. You’ll need some type of punch-out scrap to use as a stencil. I used the one from Paper Pumpkin, but any leftover will do. Or make your own if you have a heart shaped die or punch and some card stock.
The Steps
- Tape down a piece of white card stock. Or use a sticky mat. Just make sure it’s secure.
- Put the leftover scrap (or stencil) on top of the card stock, and tape it down too.
- Use blending brushes to blend two or three different colors over the scrap.
- Start with the lightest color.
- Add just a little ink at a time. Remember, you can always add more, but you can’t remove it.
- Gently take off the scrap or stencil and say “Wow.”
First Card
This first card was made mostly with elements that came with the Paper Pumpkin kit. So they aren’t available to buy. But you can recreate the look by combining a variety of hearts in various sizes and coordinating colors. Glue them over the background, and pop up a few with foam Stampin’ Dimensionals.
Second Card
This second card is pretty much all Paper Pumpkin too. But I did brush Wink of Stella over the three small hearts and portions of the big heart so it would be extra sparkly.
That’s it. See? Not too hard. Try it the next time you have one of those leftover punch-out scrap thingies. It’s a heap of fun, and with all the color combinations you can choose, every piece is an original work of art.
